From childhood, her eyes have haunted me. She cursed me at birth, to fall under a sleeping curse. Everyone is afraid of her. Everyone thinks she’s my enemy. Only I can’t think of her as an enemy. There are too many secrets surrounding her, too many silences. Who exactly is she, the dark haired, pale beauty, who haunts the tower, my guardian, and my dreams? What is the truth about her? Is she truly a wicked witch? Or is she just a girl, as cursed as I am? No one wants me to face the truth. No one wants me to look too deeply. I’m not afraid of her, even if I should be. Come with me, as I visit my tower, the enchanted forest, a lonely cottage, and look into a magic mirror. Face my curse, even as I face the spindle in her hands. Sing the words of a magic spell, even as it looms over me, threatening to completely overcome me. For I refuse to afraid of her, even if everyone thinks I should be.
Excerpt
My first memory was of her dark eyes. They seemed to capture all the colors of my infant universe, even as they threatened to swallow me. Her eyes should have been terrifying, but they weren’t.
Her blood red lips moved, shaping words I could only dimly recall. My parents remembered them only too well, as did everyone else who’d gathered at the castle for my christening.
“I, too, have a gift for this child. She shall grow up, with all the beauty and promise of the dawn, but her sun will never rise.”
My mother told me she nearly swooned with terror at the look of sheer malevolence the witch gave to the sunbeams, playing about my cradle. She wanted to stop the witch from speaking, as did my father. No one could move, no matter how much they wished to. Everyone stood, still and motionless, spellbound by the witch’s gaze.
“Before the sun sets on the eve of her sixteenth year, the princess shall prick her finger on a spindle. With the first drop of her blood, a sleep will fall upon her, claiming her for a hundred years.”
My mother tried to call in another witch to remove the curse. My father burned every spindle he could find. However, nothing could lift the curse, for all their efforts. The witch had disappeared into a cloud of green smoke. No one could find her after my christening, despite many attempts to locate her. The only thing she left behind, besides her curse, was the memory of her dark eyes.

Join Sokrat, Phaedra, Pausania, Aristophania, and Eryximachia; as each of them expresses what love means to them, unearthing buried secrets, passions, and fears within their hearts. For love means something very different to each guest, making every meal unique.
At Her Service

I’ve been at her service for years. I’m a clumsy servant, but I worship my mistress’s feet. The one ability I have is getting those feet into my lady’s uncomfortable glass slippers. I love those moments, when I have an excuse to caress and tickle her ankles. She seemed to enjoy those moments, as well.
Our best times involved those glass slippers. Only those slippers are going to get me into more trouble than they’re worth, when I find them on my feet. An invitation to a ball sends my mistress into a rage and me scurrying for the cinders. Only someone finds me there. Someone who wants me to go to the ball and dance for the first dance in my life.
Every woman should dance once, or so I’m told. The problem is I can’t dance with the person I truly wish. I find myself whisked off to a ball by means of magic. Once I’m there, I learn there’s magic in many things. I’m tempted, as I’m swept off my feet, to give into that magic. However, my heart belongs to one person.
That person is the only one I truly want to dance with. When the magic fades, I’m forced to deal with the aftermath. I also learn princes are not what they seem, no matter how charming they might be.
About the Author
All of my life, I’ve been in love with stories. I wrote my first story, when I was eleven years old. It was terrible. :) Since then, I’ve struggled to improve at storytelling. I’ve fallen into many a pit, but I’m proud to say I’ve gotten two books and a short story published, thanks to Prizm/Torquere. I often post teasers from my stories at my Cauldrons of Eternal Inspiration at inspirationcauldron.wordpress.com and inspirationcauldron.blogspot.com, if you’d like to check out my work. Everything I write has a little magic, or wonder in it. I’m hoping you’ll discover some that same magic and wonder for yourself, if you read my stories.
Thank you so very much for hosting me, Nicki!
