Editing Tips for Writers: British vs. American English—3 Key Spelling Differences

Today I thought I’d highlight three of the key spelling differences between UK and US spelling:
OU vs. O, S vs. Z, and RE vs. ER.

If you are writing a story for submission to a publisher outside of your country, check their spelling requirements.

Should you employ UK spelling when they prefer US, at worst you may find your manuscript rejected outright, and at best you’ll have a lot of fiddling to do come editing time.

Set your document to UK or US as appropriate from the start, as this will highlight most of the errors. However, watch out for RE vs. ER as Word’s spell check does not always pick up on that one.
