Today I welcome L.M. Pierce to the blog to answer a few questions
for Author Interview³.
1) Tell us 3 fun facts about your writing history
In 7th grade my teacher gave us a short story assignment. I turned in (three weeks late) a 100+ page manuscript of my very first novel. My teacher, patient and kind, beamed and read the whole thing (remember I said patient?) and even gave me an A.
I wrote a short story in 8th grade that made my teacher worry for my mental health. She sat me down and gently asked if I would like to talk to the school counselor. I convinced her my mental health was just fine—but learned to rein in some of my more creative impulses for school work.
I applied for a MFA and didn’t get accepted. I thank the universe for that every day. *squints at my growing pile of student loan debt*
2) Describe your writing style in 3 words
Eclectic, contemplative, honest.
3) Name 3 of your literary influences
Stephen King, Richard Adams, and Chuck Palahniuk.
4) Share your 3 favourite books
Watership Down, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Harry Potter (all of them, shush).
5) What are your 3 essential writing tools?
My mechanical keyboard, my ass, and my chair.
6) Where are your 3 favourite places to write?
My office, the public library, and the café in my local bookstore.
7) Name 3 items on your writing wish list
Getting a book published with Tor, writing a murder mystery novel (think a la Mo Hayder), and winning an award of some kind *coughhugocough*
8) What are your top 3 tips for aspiring writers?
There is no substitute for ass-in-chair.
Focus on finishing the damn thing—too many writers wallow in shallow puddles of misery called “edit as you go.” Screw that, just write it.
Be kind to yourself, forgive yourself, nurture yourself. Don’t allow artist abuse to happen, even inside your own head.
9) Tell us 3 of your writing plans for the year ahead.
Querying my “chicken + zombies” novel, finishing book two of Brigade, and finishing a personal poem/essay collection.
10) Tell us about your latest release
Trans Liberty Riot Brigade is a gritty, dystopian look at a possible future United States where 40% of the population is born intersex, sex assignment surgery is mandated by law, and the government has built a giant border wall. Hey, I wrote this before Donald Trump, okay? I’ve been dealing with existential fallout ever since.

How do you fight for who you are, when the government controls what you are?
Andi knows being born an intersex "Transgressor" and then choosing to stay that way, can have lethal consequences. After all, surgical assignment is mandated by law. But she ain’t going to spend her life hiding from the Society, hooked on Flow, and wanking tourists just to make a few bucks. She's a member of the Trans Liberty Riot Brigade, an underground faction of Transgressors resisting the government’s war on their illegal genitalia.
But it’s not enough to tag their messages on shithouse walls and sniff down the next high. The government has found their headquarters, decimated their ranks, and they’re crushing the resistance. Though Andi might be nothing but a junktard, she embarks on a desperate dash to stay alive and send a call for help before they’re all killed—or worse, surgically assigned.
Andi, together with Brigade leader Elenbar, must get beyond the communications block preventing all radio transmission, which means crossing the seaboard Wall barricading the United Free States borders. It’s designed to keep enemies out and the citizens in, but amid increasing earthquakes and deadly pursuit, Andi will discover there’s a far more dangerous secret hidden deep within the Wall itself.
