Weekend Blog Hops - 9 November 2018

It's the weekend once more. That means it's time for my book-blogger hopping.

Do you subscribe to any book subscription boxes?
No. I actually only became aware they existed in the last few months, since I became more active on Instagram and started to see posts about them. I absolutely adore the idea! Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy any at present. I have considered entering some of the rep searches, but I have held back so far as I'm not sure I could compete with others who have more followers, and more time and nicer props with which to make epic photos. We'll see. Maybe I'll give one or two of the rep searches a try in the new year, once I've worked on making some of my posts look a little more 'arty'.

Opening sentence:
Luka Zhirkov pulled out his rose-gold watch: it was nearly midnight.

From page 56:
Valentina was so focused on what was to come that it took a moment for her to realise that only one pair of hands were clapping.

My Current Read
The Last Days of the Romanov Dancers
Kerri Turner

Petrograd, 1914. A country on a knife-edge. The story of two people caught in the middle – with everything to lose…
A stunning debut from a talented new Australian voice in historical fiction.

Valentina Yershova's position in the Romanov's Imperial Russian Ballet is the only thing that keeps her from the clutches of poverty. With implacable determination, she has clawed her way through the ranks to soloist, utilising not only her talent, but her alliances with influential rich men that grants them her body, but never her heart. When Luka Zhirkov – the gifted son of a factory worker – joins the company, her passion for ballet and love is rekindled, putting at risk everything that she has built.

For Luka, being accepted into the company fulfills a lifelong dream. But in the eyes of his proletariat father, it makes him a traitor. As war tightens its grip and the country starves, Luka is increasingly burdened with guilt about their lavish lifestyles.

While Luka and Valentina's secret connection grows, the country rockets toward a revolution that will decide the fate of every dancer.

For the Imperial Russian Ballet has become the ultimate symbol of Romanov indulgence, and soon the lovers are forced to choose: their country, their art or each other...

A powerful novel of class turmoil, passion and just how much two people will sacrifice…

  1. I'm fascinated by the book more than the teasers. I hear Romanoff's and my ears perk. :-) I added you to the Linky. Happy weekend!

    1. Thanks for adding me. The time differences make it hard some weeks, depending on what hour your post goes up.

  2. Sounds interesting. I don't do subscription boxes either. I like books but not stuff related to books. For me, that's just clutter that I don't need in my life. This week I am spotlighting Those Who Go By Night by Andrew Gaddes - a medieval mystery from my review stack. Happy reading!

    1. Yes, they are pricey when you are taking a gamble on what you'll get.

  5. While I can't afford a subscription, I'm always so interested to see subscription box unboxings! I especially love when the people unboxing link out to the creators of each product. It's so fun to add things to to a wish list! :)

  7. The summary leaves me breathless.

I didn't know about boxes, either. Although I always blow my book budget so couldn't afford them either, I might put one on a wish list.

    1. Yes. And I think you can just get an odd one or two without committing to more, so you could pick and choose which themes appeal.
