Which genre do you like the most?
Gosh, that's almost as bad as asking me to pick a favourite book!
I think for me, being a multi-genre reader, it's easier and quicker to say what I *don't* read. Generally I avoid contemporary chick lit and true crime. Otherwise I am open to anything. I'd say thrillers and horror sit lower down the list, as only occasional reads, while literary fiction, fantasy, paranormal and historical are at the more frequent end of the spectrum.
Opening sentence:
It is said that long, long ago, there lived a princess in an underground realm, where neither lies nor pain exist, who dreamt of the human world.
From page 56:
Her mother smiled at her, but Ofelia knew the smile was meant for the Wolf.
Pan's Labyrinth
Guillermo del Toro & Cornelia Funke
Oscar winning writer-director Guillermo del Toro and New York Times bestselling author Cornelia Funke have come together to transform del Toro’s hit movie Pan’s Labyrinth into an epic and dark fantasy novel for readers of all ages, complete with haunting illustrations and enchanting short stories that flesh out the folklore of this fascinating world.
This spellbinding tale takes readers to a sinister, magical, and war-torn world filled with richly drawn characters like trickster fauns, murderous soldiers, child-eating monsters, courageous rebels, and a long-lost princess hoping to be reunited with her family.
I liked this movie a lot, but don't think I'll read the book. I always prefer reading before viewing. In all honesty, I had no idea it was a book when I saw the film. :-)
ReplyDeleteI added you to the linky. Happy Valentines weekend!!
It wasn't a book first. The book has been written subsequent to the movie. The movie is definitely better. :)
DeleteHmm, probably not a book I would read, but it does sound magical and fascinating. Here's mine: “THE JANES”
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit, Laurel.
DeleteI haven't read this book yest, but I have wanted to read it for a while. I like the quotes.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it okay, but the film is definitely better.
DeleteI don't read much in the way of true crime either. Like you, I enjoy reading quite a mix of genres. I really enjoyed the movie Pan's Labyrinth, and so am definitely curious about this one. I hope it turns out to be even better. Have a great weekend, Nicki.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the movie of Pan's Labyrinth, but the book was enjoyable enough in its way.
DeleteThanks for reminding me that I need to rewatch this movie!
ReplyDeleteLauren @ Always Me
It's one of my all-time favourite films. The book was fine, but it didn't quite capture the magic of the movie.
DeleteOh, I like this approach! It is definitely easier to say what I don't read than what I do! However, I think for me UF is my current love/favourite and it has been for some time now...
ReplyDeleteIn my younger days I definitely went through stages like that: horror, classics, paranormal romance etc. I guess as I've gotten older I've kept things broader and no longer have those 'binges' just on one genre or another.
DeleteI read fantasies and mysteries/thrillers. I'm quite picky about what I read.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend!
You too Laura. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI love this movie and definitely want to check out the novelization. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThe novel was fun, but I definitely think it works best as a movie.
DeleteIt was so hard to pick a favorite genre. For me, it really depends on the day. Today it might be one thing and tomorrow could be a totally different one. :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Mood and what's going on in my life can definitely play a part in what I pick up next from the TBR pile.
DeleteWow, a movie made into a book? An interesting collaboration.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is easier to pick what I don't like to read than a single favorite genre. I guess the only one I really avoid is horror. I even read the occasional true crime.
Yes, movie to book is a different way to do it, for sure. In this case, though the book was fine, I believe the movie is still better.
DeleteThis week's BBH question was an easy one for me to answer, considering my blog is packed with reviews for paranormal romance and urban fantasy books, I don’t think it’ll come as a surprise that my 💜 favourite 💜 reading genre is adult PARANORMAL ROMANCE! 😘 Although there does seem to be more genre crossovers now than in previous years.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend Nicki.
Here's my BBH Post
Flora x
Thanks for stopping by Flora. I had a solid paranormal romance reading stage once too. I still read them a bit these days, but interspersed with other genres. :)
