In an abandoned Tokyo overrun by bubbles and gravitational abnormalities, one gifted young man has a fateful meeting with a mysterious girl. (Synopsis)

Bubble first caught my eye on Netflix's 'Worth the Wait' list because the character on the poster made me think of Obata Takeshi (my favourite manga artist). It turns out, that's because he did the character design! First off I should say that the animation in this movie is sublime. Every shot is so beautiful, from the characters to the scenery, so it's a visual treat from start to finish. The story is a sort of take on The Little Mermaid. The premise is interesting, but there were a few points regarding the bubbles on which I would have appreciated a little more clarification. Hibiki and Uta were both delightful characters, and the supporting cast were also memorable. I just wish it had been a little longer, to delve into some of the themes in greater depth. This is a solid offering, though, and with such stunning visuals, it's definitely a piece I can see myself watching again. It gets 4.5 stars from me.
