Although I have never read the graphic novels on which The Sandman is based, I was looking forward to the show purely on the strength of how much I've enjoyed other Neil Gaiman books and productions. Visually, The Sandman is a stunning piece. I loved the show's aesthetic and the VFX were all well done. Casting, too, seemed to be good, as the performers all had chemistry. Where the show dipped a little for me was in plot and pacing. Both felt a bit disjointed, and although it all came together in the end, there were times I wondered if the sudden detours were simply to introduce a character fans would expect to see, rather than because that character was needed to tell the story. The ending was clearly left wide open for a second series, and if one comes I probably would watch it, but I wasn't so enamoured with this first season that I will be desperately waiting for it. Overall, I am giving this 3.5 stars.
