In a modern-day monarchical Korea, a bright musical actress enters an unforgiving world of sinister secrets when she marries the emperor. (Synopsis)
It's hard to decide how to describe The Last Empress in terms of genre. It's part drama, part fantasy (a monarchy in modern-day Korea), part mystery-thriller and part romance. All up, though, it's a brilliant series that kept me hooked from start to finish. Although it runs to 26 episodes (each 1 hour), it doesn't drag or feel too long, and there's quite an emotional roller coaster ride along the way. The cast all gave excellent, nuanced performances and it's a series that will stick in my mind for a long time to come and which I could even see myself wanting to watch again. I am giving it 5 stars.
