Film Review: Suzume (2022) (Fantasy Anime)

Suzume (すずめの戸締まり)
2022
PG
Shinkai Mokoto (Director)
Fantasy Anime
Netflix

After she unknowingly opens a door of chaos, 17-year-old Suzume joins forces with a young man to help prevent more calamity from befalling Japan. (Synopsis)

Having enjoyed Your Name and Weathering with You, I was keen to see what Suzume had to offer. Overall, it was another enjoyable coming-of-age tale. The premise was interesting (if perhaps a little underdeveloped), Suzume was a relatable characters, and the cat, Daijin, was super cute. The animation looked good throughout, with some wonderful visual moments, and I enjoyed the performances by the voice artists. I am giving it four stars, as I did think a little more world building would have helped, as well as a little more development of the relationship between the two main characters, which felt a bit too sudden to me. But it's well worth a watch if you like Japanese fantasy animation with excellent visuals and a sweet story.
