Theatre Review: Chicago

Chicago
27 July 2024
Capitol Theatre
Sydney
Musical

I have seen Chicago twice before in London, but my husband and I decided to see the show in Sydney while we were there for a long weekend. Mostly for something to do, but also because I have long been a fan of Anthony Warlow and he was playing Billy Flynn in this run.

Anthony's performance was excellent as always. As for the rest of the cast, Lucy Maunder and Zoƫ Ventoura were both good as Roxie and Velma, as was Peter Rowsthorn as Amos. The weaker cast members were Asabi Goodman as Mama Morton and S Valeri as Mary Sunshine. Acting-wise both were okay, but I found their vocal performances lacking in contrast to other performers I have seen in the roles. The dancers were a tad out of sync here and there but generally good, while the band did well throughout. Overall, it was an enjoyable performance and I am giving it four stars.
