When a mysterious illness knocks Zhao Yunlan off his feet, he enjoys being doted on by Shen Wei—until he discovers a grim secret that threatens to tear them apart. However, it’s not just their domestic bliss that’s on the verge of collapse. The Great Seal is cracking, order itself is about to break down and extinguish all life, and their only hope to stop the destruction is the final Hallowed Artifact: the Soul-Guarding Lamp. But even as the world threatens to crumble around them, Zhao Yunlan searches for the truth and a way to keep Shen Wei by his side, this time for all eternity.

The finale to Guardian presented readers with a dramatic and emotional ending to the tale. It was interesting to see throughout the series the differences between the original book and the TV drama. I love Zhu Yi Long's portrayal of Shen Wei in the drama, but I also really like the greater contrast between the character's two personas -- Shen Wei and the Soul-Executing Emissary -- in the books, which gives him a darker vibe at times. Of course, this volume contained the usual lovely illustrations throughout and I also enjoyed the selection of bonus stories at the end. Guardian is definitely among my favourite danmei novels of those I've read so far. I am giving this final volume, and the series as a whole five stars.
