Having enjoyed Thousand Autumns by the same author, I was interested to see what Peerless had to offer. The characters and their situations caught my interest right from the start. I enjoyed the banter between them and the unfolding mystery behind the murder of the envoy. There was no issue with the world building; I always felt like I had the information I needed to make sense of the story. Meanwhile, the action moved along at a good pace throughout, with the usual illustrations scattered between the chapters adding visual impact to the story. This volume ended with me keen to find out what will happen next, so I will be eagerly awaiting volume 2 later in the year. I am giving this opening volume 4.5 stars and I look forward to seeing how the story, and the relationship between the two men, will progress.
