Secrets and Lies

In the wake of their intoxicated tryst, He Yu's relationship with his erstwhile physician Xie Qingcheng is more fraught than ever. One taste has left He Yu addicted, and not even his pride can stop him from coming back for more; yet the taciturn Xie Qingcheng is determined to ward off his advances at all costs.

More than lust drives He Yu's relentless pursuit: he knows Xie Qingcheng is still keeping secrets from him. What was the real reason he stopped being He Yu's doctor? What's the truth behind the scandal that cost Xie Qingcheng his reputation? As He Yu searches for answers, malevolent forces move in the shadows, drawing him and Xie Qingcheng into a deadly, inescapable trap.

Volume 3 of Case File Compendium offered an intense continuation of the physical relationship between He Yu and Xie Qingcheng (we can't really call it romance at this stage). That was the primary focus of this volume; however, towards the end we began to get a glimpse of some movement in the plot, with murder afoot and some murky goings-on related to threads of narrative from the early volumes. It's hard to comment on that too much at present, but I am certainly interested to see where this will lead as we head into the next volume. The main relationship storyline remains contentious, but I do enjoy the shifting power play between the two men. I am giving this volume 4.5 stars.
