TV Review: Hot Stove League (2019) (Drama)

Hot Stove League (스토브리그)
2019
16 episodes
M
Drama
Netflix

During off-season, a professional baseball team ranked dead last in the league hires an unorthodox manager who's determined to push it to the top.

I am not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination and would have passed Hot Stove League by were it not for the fact that I had enjoyed the lead actor's performances in other series and decided to watch it for him. In the end, though, I was pleasantly surprised. I know nothing about baseball (not unlike the main character), but I still enjoyed the drama as the cast fought to fix the problems in the organisation, keep the team afloat, and quit being the constantly losing side. It was well-paced, compelling and, unusually for a K-drama, devoid of any romance, even as a subplot. So, if you are looking for a K-drama that focuses on characters and story rather than romantic entanglements, it's definitely worth a watch. I am giving it four stars.
